Can School Spirit Turns Classrooms into Fun and Excitement?
Can you imagine students excited about learning history, Or having fun participating in a math experiment?
This is a real event! 16 teams line up in colorful uniforms, ready for the school's dodge ball contest. Students, teachers and administrators were ready to lay it all on line for School Spirit.
What was it that brought all these people together? Was it an overwhelming School Spirit, or was it the irresistible urge to see the School Principal beamed with a rubber ball?
It was all in fun, but you can count on it that Principal David Broskie, would be the principal target.
The teachers had three teams in the contest, and the students had 13. It was a rag-tag team of Broncos, named the Dominators, who walked away as the champions with a year's worth of bragging rights.
It was a fun time as the students and teachers came together to show their school spirit. Why can't we carry this fun into the classroom?
The Cheerleaders are lined up along the edge of the sports field, the team is about to make a touchdown, the stadium is roaring with yells, and everyone is excited. Why can't we carry this excitement into the classroom?
The School Band is marching down the sports field, the drums sound like thunder in our ears, we are all excited, we stand with an ovation for the Band, and for our team, enthusiastic about the game. Why can't we carry this enthusiasm into the classroom?
School Spirit does make a difference. We are excited about learning, or we are indifferent. We are interested, or we don't care. School Spirit makes the difference. But, how do we get School Spirit into the classroom?
We don't stop to think about what creates enthusiasm, excitement, and school spirit when we have it. When we have it, we are consumed with it, and not with what caused it.
Last year the actor who was inside the Mickey Mouse costume at Disney World had her picture taken with thousands of people, mostly kids. It was not because of who she was, it was because of the fantasy character named Mickey Mouse, who isn't a real mouse at all.
The characters of Disney World excite thousands of people world-wide. The excitement is because of what the people feel, as a result of seeing the character, not the actor in the costume. The feelings that were generated because of that Mascot Character made billions of dollars for Disney last year.
You could say that Disney knows how to use his Mascot Characters, to attract people to his amusement park, and how to get the people excited. Some of the Colleges and Universities have learned the magic, and attract enthusiastic interest, and build excitement. Most K-12 Schools have yet to learn the magic of the mascot character to create interest, and enthusiasm.
Mascot Characters create excitement and get attention!
We see it in successful commercial operations, and in professional sports and universities, but we have yet to use it in our K-12 Schools to its best advantage. Why can't we grasp the magic of the Mascot character? Most schools do have a mascot; but they haven't made the Mascot a Character yet!
Have you noticed that every fantasy mascot has a name, and a personality? They are somebody in the sense that they are a "Character."
If we want School Spirit, excitement and enthusiasm in the classroom, we must name our Mascot, and give it Character. Disney involves Mascots in everything connected with the amusement park; pardon me, everything connected with the Company. We must learn how to use the Mascot in connection with everything connected to the School.
The Mascot and Cheerleading Squad are mostly involved with football and the games every Friday night. We must get them involved in the Music and Academic programs in the school. We can do it if we want to, and get the same results Disney does.
School Awards come in the form of your Mascot Character. Using these mascot awards in special events will introduce excitement into the program. The Small School Mascot should be part of the awards. You can start on the first day of School and continue through out the twelve years, and when the student graduates they get a Graduation Mascot as a final award.
Mascot Awards come as the Grade Mascot, the Class Mascot, the Special Events Mascot, the Graduation Mascot, and dozens of other special awards. It can be personalized to represent any event in school. Students love them, and they create the School Spirit that you want!
It will not come in one day, or one year, but we can do it. We can make our schools as popular, and as exciting as Disney World. They did it, and so can you! Put your heart in it and let's take action to make it so.
